Beating the Summer Pigmentation Blues

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Skincare

As summer winds down you may notice that your skin is looking dull, tired, and dry. I know I see it in clients all the time as August rolls around. Sun, wind, salt, chlorine, and too much fun can be hard on the skin.

Signs of sun damage like wrinkles, brown spots, freckles, and blotchy skin are also more prevalent in the summer. Sun damage that you see today, like light from the stars, was created in the past. What we see today was done years ago in our fun loving and too often SPF free youth.

The best protection you can give the skin from future sun damage is to stay out of it and use proper SPF, but for the damage that was already done, well it’s time to start repairing it with the right facials and daily skin care routine.

Pigmentation needs a four pronged approach.

1) Protect from future damage with SPF EVERY DAY.

2) Topical brightener to reduce superficial topical discoloration.

3) A topical melanin inhibitor that will reduce more pigmentation from forming.

4) Dedication and time. Pigmentation needs time to repair.
To speed up the process a series of pigment busting facials will always help. The Hydrafacial, Epicuren Four Layer Enzyme, or Switch Treatment are all excellent options to get you on the road to clearer and brighter skin. Come in and see which series would be right for you. Either way, your summer skin will thank you.

Fading Scars: It’s Possible

temp-post-imageIt is always fun to hear the story behind the scar. It is a marking of when you fell out of the tree, had surgery on your wrist, or got too close to the stove and suffered burns from spitting oil. Some scars are not revealed as they are hidden under clothing, yet others are out in the open for everyone to see. Time does aid in the fading of scars but not everyone has this level of patience. There are some solutions to healing and fading scars and a few tips to get you started:

  • Consider HydraFacials. To really attack scars, a procedure called hydra-dermabrasion can be performed. This procedure, which basically removes a layer of skin while adding vital nourishment and activating collagen, is quite common. It’s used to revitalize the skin and reduce the appearance of raised scars.
  • Massage. If you have a scar that bugs you, point it out to me on your next visit. Often some specialized massaging can be done to the area to break up the tissue.
  • Use SPF. It’s vital to protect the scar from the sun’s harmful rays. By shielding the scar from the sun, it decreases the likelihood of hyper-pigmentation, where the scar turns color.
  • Deep Sea Peel. For the truly deep or old scar a series of Deep Sea Peels can work miracles. I’ve been doing them on my thyroid removal scar with wonderful results and have used them on a number of now invisible old scars on my body.

411 on Hyperpigmentation

While many people are born with it, some people develop a skin pigmentation disorder over time and don’t even realize it. Pigmentation refers to the color of a person’s skin, and skin pigmentation disorders come in many forms like an uneven or blotchy complexion, age spots, liver spots, freckles and birth marks. When someone has a pigmentation disorder, they are either having an overproduction (think brown, purple, or pink spots) or an underproduction of a certain pigment (think Michael Jackson).

Melanin is the name of this pigment, and it is responsible for protecting us from those harmful UV rays that come from the sun. The more sun exposure we have, the more melanin is supposed to be deposited, and as a result, the skin gets darker, aka a “tan”.

Overproduction of melanin, or “hyper-pigmentation”, can also be caused by damaging the dermis through wounds, hormonal changes, and nutritional deficiency or prescription drugs. The sad thing about pigmentation is that once you see it, it’s too late. The damage has already been done.

However, don’t lose hope! There are ways to reduce the pigment and decreasing the appearance of hyper-pigmentation in addition to smoothing and evening out the skin tone. There are lots of products and treatments that work on this. If this is something that bothers you come in and we can start to work on it because no matter what your skin concern, I look forward to working with you to achieve beautiful, radiant skin.
